Forms and Ways of Expressing Resistance in Selected Lyrics by Polish Alternative Bands of the 1980s

Abstract

The aim of this article is to present forms and strategies of resistance in the last decade of the existence of the Polish People’s Republic. Due to the nature of the text, the multiplicity of previous studies, and the research perspective, the role of the most recognisable political institutions and organisations that contributed to the fall of the totalitarian system in Poland was omitted, while alternative and rock music were highlighted as means of resistance. An attempt at a synthesis was made on the basis of additional issues such as: prolonged liminality, ambivalence of the code, and mechanisms of the system. In the analytical part, an interpretation of the lyrics and a deconstruction of the musical layer of the works of two new wave bands, Kult and Republika (the album 1984 [Nowe sytuacje]), was made in relation to the issue of resistance.

Keywords:

resistance, prolonged liminality, ambivalence, Polish People’s Republic, code, alternative music, totalitarian system
