The Musical Iconography of the St. Nicholas Church in Gąsawa

Abstract

The origins of the Gąsawa temple may date back to the first half of the 12th century and are associated with the Abbey of the Canons Regular of the Lateran in Trzemeszno. In 1705-1706, the interior of the temple of St. Nicholas in Gąsawa was richly decorated with unusual wall painting; it is more than 700 m2 of Baroque polychrome. Its ideological program presents religious content, which is a kind of catechesis on the truths of faith, Gospel descriptions, historiography of saints, moral conduct, as well as musical instrumentation and figures and inscriptions related to heavenly music. The musical iconography of the church is a source and testimony of Polish culture, and it leads to a deeper search for symbolic and metaphorical meanings. Describing and reading the symbolism of paintings related to music became the main goal of this article. To achieve this result, historical, analytical, iconographic and iconological methods were used.
