An Exile’s Dream of a Hat and a University: An Excerpt from Tomasz Zan’s Diary

Abstract

The article examines an excerpt from Tomasz Zan’s diary describing his dream. This is linked to the theme of dreams and their interpretation, so strongly present in Romanticism, as well as the realm of “Polish dreams”, a term coined by Michał Kuziak, which conveys the idea that Polish Romantic onirism has its own unique touch, setting it apart from similar motifs present in Western Romanticism. The author argues that this inconspicuous fragment of the diary encapsulates all features of a diary: principally, emphasis on details, departure from causal-and-effect links between successive events, and the unique quality that is called “bewilderment” in the dream. With all these elements Zan captures the essence of his life as an exile.
