Towards Unity and Fullness: Philomathism as a Proposal of Existence

Abstract

The topic of the article is a reflection on the phenomenon of Philomatism, treated here as a coherent existential proposition, which, in the case of Adam Mickiewicz, allowed the poet to capture the meaning of his own life for many years. This model postulated that an individual person realizes himself only through participation in various communities–from the most intimate friendship relationship to the national community. I treat the aspect of overcoming the processes of emancipation of the individual for the benefit of the community as a particular distinguishing feature of Polish romanticism born from the Philomatic experience. I treat this experience not as an “episode” in the biography of the poet and his generation, but as a special turning point in Mickiewicz’s biography.
