“I Am the Mirror of the Time.” The Subjective Experience of the Present in the Epistolary Prose of Tomasz Zan

Abstract

The text talks about Tomasz Zan’s subjective feeling and understanding (experiencing) of present. The subject of the analysis is his “epistolary prose” – “chapters” located in the correspondence of the Philomaths from 1815-1823. Reading Zan’s letters doesn’t base on the relationship between the sender and the recipient, but accepts the dominant character of the speaker. Therefore, the philomath’s epistolographic strategy, connecting the form of a letter with literature, is treated as a record of experience. Observation of Zan’s student prose and correspondence from this perspective leads to the conclusion that the essential material of these texts is the individual time of the sensitive writer – the individual and asynchronous feeling of the historicity of the entity. Based on Zan’s epistolary achievements we can show two types of an experiencing of the present. The first is about a relationship between the individual and the community. The second one we can call “internal experience”.
