Abstract

This paper is devoted to a comparative analysis of the preposition a/à in French and Italian. As the study is based on cognitive linguistics, the functioning of the preposition is examined in terms of the role of perception, the collective experience of the world, and discourse, since this is where the linguistic choices of the speakers of a given language are made. The research hypotheses are as follows: 1. the preposition a/à represents the same semantic values in French and Italian, while their organization within the category is different and their prototypical uses are different; 2. the preposition a/à has the same semantic invariant formula in both languages; 3. the preposition a/à belongs to two different linguistic images of the world. A comparison of the functioning of the preposition a/à in Italian and French showed no difference in perception or prototype usage. The difference appeared at the level of the definition of the semantic invariant.

Keywords:

preposition a/à, perception, conceptualization, semantic invariant, prototype, linguistic image of the world
