Netflix’s English-Spanish Translation of Manner Motion Verbs in the Subtitling of Sports Documentaries from the Perspective of Language Learning

Abstract

This paper focuses on exploring the level of specificity of manner motion verbs translated from English to Spanish in the field of sports. To achieve this, two sports documentaries from the Netflix platform (Home Game and The Playbook) have been used and the subtitles offered by the Language Reactor extension have been analyzed in both languages. The purpose was to verify whether it is possible to use these tools as a resource for the learning of Movement lexicalization patterns in the process of second language acquisition. This work analyzes the level of inclusion of information about manner as used by the translator, and the results suggest that these tools are not suitable for learning movement lexicalization patterns. Nevertheless, they do represent a source of didactic content for creating learning activities which focus on form, and which is a suitable method for this type of more detailed grammatical content.
