This paper aims to present the key issues and threads related to popular culture and music taken up by Luciano Berio in his writings. This paper discusses the problems presented by Berio, such as the properties and functions of popular music, the relationship between music and mass culture, the sound of rock music, the criticism of synthesizers, the use of voice, and the impact of technology on popular music. The paper also shows the connections between the composer’s way of defining selected phenomena, his attitude, and his compositions. Written sources, including papers and interviews, published over the composer’s lifetime, are subject to a comparative analysis in terms of the composer’s approach to a given problem.
