“A Song is Good for Everything” or “I Don’t Believe a Song”? Universal Music Education as “Song Education”

Abstract

The aim of this article is to present the results of an analysis of the core curricula and textbooks for the subject “music” in universal music education in Poland and their interpretation as “song education”. Song education is a method of education that refers to musical pop culture in the fields of the hegemony of song as a genre, the choice and form of presenting music literature, commenting on and interpreting music, the scope of knowledge about music, building the image of music and the universality of pop culture conventions, and the structure of the universal music education system. As part of this system, song education gains cultural approval, leading to “song awareness” and “song culture”.
