The Irresistible Charm of Tosca. Between Literature and Music from the 19th to the 21st Century: From Sardou to Magni, from Puccini to Dalla

Abstract

This article aims to provide an intertextual analysis of two 19th-century works, namely the historical drama by Victorien Sardou, and the opera by Giacomo Puccini, with contemporary adaptations based on this “modern myth” of Tosca: Luigi Magni’s 1973 film and Lucio Dalla’s 2003 musical. The analysis shows the connections between both classical and popular literature and music. This study concludes that Magni’s film draws more widely from the French drama, skilfully using the historical setting as a type of mask for historical recurrence, while Dalla’s musical draws from themes in Italian opera, focusing on the psychological dimension of an individual’s catastrophes. Both, Magni and Dalla, create a type of contemporary allegory that dialogues with literary and musical traditions while proposing their original reinterpretation, enriching the hypertextual play with 19th-century prototypes.
