The Song Is the Art of Rhythm: Verse Forms of Five Polish Songs

Abstract

The present article is an attempt to analyse selected songs with the use of tools used in the study of poetic works. The author, inspired by the concept of the song as an example of oral poetry (Paul Zumthor), conducted metrical analyses, supplemented with references to the semantics and stylistic specificity of the works analysed. The selection of the texts analysed aims to show that each of them belongs to a different “musical world” and is distinguished by the individual author’s poetics, which opens up the field for discussion on the creative strategies of poets and “lyricists”. The songs discussed belong to five stylistically different varieties of popular songs: the milder variety of rock (Marek Grechuta), the guitar ballad (Edmund Fetting), synth pop (Halina Frąckowiak), blues (Tadeusz Nalepa) and the sharper form of the rock song (Kora i Maanam). This dissertation concerns the issues of versology in the poetics of the song genre.
