The Apotheosis of the Coat of Arms of Bishop Walenty Wężyk (1705-1766) in the Latin Heraldic Poems in the Ordos of the Diocese of Chełm

Abstract

Heraldic poetry is increasingly attracting the attention of literary scholars. However, texts on, and studies of, poems published in the ordos of the early modern era are very rarely present in the current exchange of knowledge. One of the reasons for this is the low availability of these types of prints. Many have not survived due to their functional nature. The ones that have lasted are found in a very small number of copies, and their finding requires a great deal of effort. The collection of five Latin heraldic poems analyzed here is dedicated to the Wąż (Snake) coat of arms, which belonged to bishop Walenty Wężyk. He was the shepherd of the Chełm diocese in the years 1753-1765. The poems are elegiac couplets, and are presented in this article translated into Polish. Their content corresponds to the ideological paradigm of their epoch.
