Désarmé ou des armées? An Analysis of the Strategies for Translating Wordplay into Polish in a Fictionalised Biography of Francis of Assisi

Abstract

This study of strategies for translating wordplay seeks to contribute to the discussion of the linguistic mechanisms in the two languages and of the discursive competences required of translators of children’s literature. In the first section, the author examines humour as adapted to adolescent readers (focusing on complicity and incongruity) as well as on the linguistic operations (e.g. repetition, diversion, allusion) that generate the rhetorical devices on which the wordplay is based. This typology will enable the analysis, in the following sections, of those strategies adopted for translating wordplay, in order to distinguish those that relate to the language system itself from those associated with the translator’s own discursive competence. The analysis of selected examples confirms previous findings, showing that functional equivalence is paramount in the translation of wordplay. It also supports theoretical approaches to the translation of literature for young people that prioritise case-study based research.
