An Analysis of the Translation of Proper Names in Christelle Dabos’s Tetralogy La Passe-miroir: Illustrating the Problem of Proper-Name Translation in Young Adult Fantasy Literature

Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyse how the Polish translator renders proper names in Christelle Dabos’s tetralogy La Passe-miroir, and to identify which translation techniques predominate in the text and which strategy the translator adopts: domestication or foreignisation. To this end, the analysis draws on Krzysztof Hejwowski’s classification of translating techniques for proper names. The study also investigates whether the fictional worldview created by the author has been preserved, and whether the meanings of the proper names has been accurately conveyed in the target language. The analysis is preceded by a brief overview of the fantasy literary genre and its development within the French publishing market. Furthermore, particular attention is paid to the problems posed by proper names and the problems encountered by the translator when translating this series, which belongs to the genre of fantasy literature for young adults.
