This article provides a brief overview of children aged 7–10 and their cognitive abilities for learning foreign languages. It highlights the importance of children’s literature in foreign language teaching, drawing on Gilbert Delahaye’s Martynka series as a source for learning French vocabulary amongst Polish children in this age group. Particular attention is paid to the syntagmatic relationships between holonyms and meronyms that structure the thematic vocabulary, with the “the human body” serving as an example. The analysis is illustrated with sentences taken from the picture books and translated into Polish in order to illustrate the differences between the two languages. Finally, the article emphasises the importance of these relationships in vocabulary acquisition amongst children aged 7–10 in primary school.
