The Concept of Spiritual Childhood in Sister Faustina Kowalska’s Diary and Its English Translation

Abstract

The aim of the analysis in this paper is to discuss how the concept of SPIRITUAL CHILDHOOD is expressed in Sister Faustina Kowalska’s Diary and its translation into English by Teresa Bałuk-Ulewiczowa, where the saint’s relationship with God is characterised by her having the spirit of a child. In this paper, I adopt the approach of Cognitive Linguistics, and in the analysis I account for the fact that it is the conceptual metaphor god is father which underlies the linguistic descriptions of the spiritual childhood of Sr. Faustina, both in the source and target text. In conclusion, the analysis emphasises the significance of a shared Christian heritage for the translatability of a mystical text between Polish and Anglophone cultures.
