The Vasas of Poland on the Move – Władysław Zygmunt Vasa in the Southern Netherlands in 1624

Abstract

Władysław Sigismund Vasa, when already king, fondly recalled his great journey to Western Europe. He particularly emphasised his well-remembered stay at the court of Infanta Isabella Clara Eugenia in Brussels. The Polish ruler remembered the southern Netherlands as the most beautiful country in the world, a fact he always spoke of in more intimate conversations. Stanisław Kobierzycki, describing the prince’s visit to Venice in The History of Władysław, noted his growing fondness for the Serenissima: “When the Venetians were embroiled in a war with Crete and asked him for help, he had already prepared an army for them…, but neither the Senate nor the Estates agreed to sending it [in 1645]. Until the end of his life, Władysław believed and trusted the Venetians so strongly that he offered them his mediation.”
