The 15th Century Antiphonary from the Cistercian Abbey in Mogila: A Source for Liturgical Monody Studies

Abstract

This article is a preliminary presentation of the oldest available Cistercian antiphonary from the Cistercian Abbey in Mogiła. Due to its unique character, it constitutes an important source of knowledge about the ancient Cistercian liturgy and the musical art practised in this monastery. Even a preliminary examination of the book reveals that we are in fact dealing with three different sources, not all of which necessarily have a Cistercian provenance, but whose selected fragments have been so skillfully integrated from a liturgical point of view that they form a single book. Since it was prepared for the Cistercian community, it is an invaluable source for the knowledge of the choir prayer of this order. The directions for further research outlined in the article will certainly provide much valuable information and research material for musicologists and liturgists dealing with the Cistercian officium divinum.
