The Simple System Wooden Transverse Flute and the Instrumental Traditions of the Lublin Region

Abstract

The aim of the article is to present the role of The Simple System Transverse Flute in the musical culture of the Lublin region, with particular emphasis on its historical context, functions, and performance practice. The study seeks to demonstrate how the instrument was adapted within local tradition and became a distinctive element of regional ensembles. The methodology includes an examination of available archival materials and field sources, as well as auditory analysis of recordings. Special attention has been devoted to the repertoire and playing style of Antoni Bednarz and the Kapela Braci Bednarzy, who represent the most characteristic example of the instrument’s rootedness in the region’s musical practice. The analysis of recordings points to the characteristic use of high registers, while the repertoire encompasses both older dance-music forms and newer ones, incorporated gradually alongside transformations of tradition. The conclusions highlight, among other aspects, the significance of the wooden transverse flute as an important medium of transmitting tradition and as a marker of regional identity.
