Metaphysics and Metaphysical Experience in the Thought of Karol Ludwik Koniński – Preliminary Examinations

Abstract

The article is an attempt to indicate the main meanings of the terms “metaphysics” and “metaphysical” in the writings of Karol Ludwik Koniński, and also presents this writer and thinker’s understanding of metaphysical experience. These are preliminary findings, but they already lead to the conclusion that the meaning of these terms was significantly influenced by the topic of Koniński’s reflection on religious issues. In his reflection, two basic understandings of the metaphysical can be distinguished. The first of these meanings, more general, indicates kinship with what is religious, the second, more embedded in philosophical reflection, concerns the essence of being. His approach to metaphysical (as well as religious and mystical) experience reveals the aporia between the subject and the object of faith, i.e. an internal instinct, feeling or experience, and the external purpose of these intuitions and experiences, which is crucial for Koniński’s entire thought. At the end of the article, metaphysical aspects in Koniński’s literary criticism and original work are outlined.
