Is It So Black and White? Colour Perceptions Based on Lexical Comparisons with Black, White and Red in Dutch, French and Polish

Abstract

Every country and culture associates colors with different elements (prototypes, cognitive reference points). Prototypes are words that define a particular color, such as sky – blue, grass – green, blood – red. These categories may diverge when looking at different languages. Vocabulary and idioms related to colors are an interesting topic of analysis for comparative studies, as they reveal both linguistic and cultural differences. The purpose of this analysis is to collect lexical definitions of colors (white, black, and red) and lexical comparisons involving colors in Dutch, French, and Polish to determine the extent to which they are perceived similarly.
