Abstract

Polish and Dutch differ when it comes to the vowel area of the phonetic system: both in terms of the number of vowels and in ability to combine vowels into larger complexes. This results in a number of systemic and articulatory errors in the pronunciation of two types of Dutch diphthongs by Polish speakers. However, as the analysis of the collected material (pronunciation recordings of first year Dutch students at the University of Wrocław) shows, other types of errors also appear in pronunciation, such as those motivated by orthography or resulting from the influence of foreign languages which the subjects learned before Dutch (like English and German). There are also individual tendencies to repeat specific errors in the pronunciation of Dutch diphthongs. The purpose of this article is to analyze these very errors in detail, as well as to point out their importance in the process of learning Dutch pronunciation.
