The Great War in the Literary Experience of Stanisław Dzikowski

Abstract

The article analyzes the literary and journalistic activity of Stanisław Dzikowski between 1914–1918, highlighting the impact of World War I on his work. The analysis shows that the war did not hinder Dzikowski’s literary activity, but it became a stimulus for reflection on the culture and statehood future. His work fits within the trend of occasional and propaganda literature, characterized by documentarism, emotionalism, and desire to influence the audience. Dzikowski applied various literary forms: from memoir, through picture story, to satire, in order to capture the complexity of wartime reality. Photography served as a means of communication for him during the time of linguistic crisis. The article argues that Dzikowski, like many writers of the era, treated war as space for cultural and political mobilization, and his works contributed to the foundations of reflection on Poland’s independent future.
