„Na próżno błaga Eneasz Dydonę, aby mu wybaczyła odejście i zdradę”. Around Rhetoric, Dialogicity, Reception of Ovid’s Heroides VII

Abstract

A literary studies essay on the genre and invention sources and reception of Ovid’s Heroides VII. Attention has been drawn to the ancient author’s innovations in narrative delivery. An attempt has been made to demonstrate the presence in the heroine’s letters of the features of internal monologue and the degree of retelling. The preservation of semantic and formal equivalence in the 17th-century translation of Dido’s letter to Aeneas by Melchior Pudlowski has been emphasised. A dialogue was entered into with Michał Głowiński, who, in a study, raised the issue of the (anti-)rhetorical nature of the statements of female literary characters. Strategies of cultural literary theory were used in the mode of argument.
