This article presents professional translation as a tool for language acquisition, with a focus on the language combinations Dutch-Czech and Czech-Dutch . The contribution first outlines the theoretical framework that underlies the courses in professional translation, which cover technical, medical and legal texts. Subsequently, the main differences between the text types are discussed, as well as the specific challenges translators have to solve, with a particular focus on legal texts. The methods and translation strategies used in translation courses to address the most common translation problems are discussed. Finally, it explains how students acquire various (sub)competencies through translating professional texts that not only help them in their translation performance, but also contribute to their overall language skills.
