Post-Editing Of Machine Translation: Is It A Form Of Translation Or Revision?

Abstract

Machine translation (MT) is increasingly used by both amateurs and professional translators. For professionals, it is crucial to use MT correctly as a tool and to thoroughly review the machine-translated texts through post-editing (PE). The article explores whether PE is a form of translation, requiring creative skills to produce a target-language text, or a form of revision, where the machine output is reviewed, assessed, and adjusted. It also examines whether translators need different skills for PE compared to traditional translation tasks without MT. The article defines professional translation and revision, outlines the necessary skills for PE, such as digital literacy, risk assessment, and error anticipation, and offers suggestions for incorporating PE training in language and translation programs for various language combinations.
