Testimony from the Depths of the Taiga. Jerzy Woszczynin – A Forgotten Chapter of Polish Gulag Literature

Abstract

The article analyses Jerzy Woszczynin’s trilogy – Jutro znów karczujemy, Zona and Na przełaj – a valuable but little-known example of Polish Gulag literature. The author reconstructs the writer’s biography and the context in which his work was created and received, highlighting its marginalisation in previous literary studies. As a direct witness and victim of Soviet repression, Woszczynin created a coherent and multifaceted testimony of concentration camp life. The value of this testimony derives not only from its documentary reliability, but also from its thoughtful literary construction. Particular focus is given to the relationship between fact and literature, narrative strategies, the role of memory, and spiritual survival mechanisms. Woszczynin’s prose is situated within the context of 20th century Polish Gulag literature, demonstrating its significance as a hitherto underestimated voice in the discourse on totalitarianism, human dignity, and the power of testimony.
