Coat of Arms of Świdnik as a Unique Phenomenon in Urban Heraldry

Abstract

This article is devoted to living heraldry, or in other words applied heraldry, using the example of research on the coat of arms of the city of Świdnik. It can be described as a unique example of Polish municipal heraldry. The city of Świdnik received city rights in 1954 and, like several other industrial cities, did not have a coat of arms. In Świdnik, the city authorities organized a competition for a coat of arms design, which was approved by the City National Council in 1979 after the competition was decided. The winning project was intended by its creator to represent the city through a stylized letter S and to reflect the nature of aviation production developed in the Świdnik Communication Equipment Factory by presenting a propeller and a wing with an aileron. It seems that the task assigned to the coat of arms is too complicated, and the content it represents indicates the ideological basis of the design selection criteria. Referring to industrialization is too narrow an approach to the rich history of Świdnik. The article points to the need to reflect on the coat of arms established in 1978, which in the author’s opinion requires correction or complete change.
