The Stages of Jerzy Minder

Abstract

The article examines the life and works of Jerzy Minder (1921–1944). The tragic fate of this author and his quantitatively modest but interesting body of writing is considered in three contexts: The Generation of Columbuses (the wartime generation), camp literature (mostly gulag writings), and the “infected with death” formula. The article, which presents an outline of Minder’s biography and discusses his works (especially those dealing with the Soviet concentration camps, some of the earliest in Polish literature), proposes broadening the definition of The Generation of Columbuses – customarily understood as a generation of those who lived and created under the German occupation – to include authors whose fate was marked by Soviet totalitarianism.
