    Hybrid Forms of Identity in the Borderland Novels of Zbigniew Żakiewicz

    Abstract

    The subject of the analysis are the borderland novels by Zbigniew Żakiewicz, Wolf Meadows (Wilcze łąki) and Wilio, in the depths of the sea (Wilio, w głębokościach morza). The key element of the world presented in these works is the historical Ashmyan region, which in the literary discourse was perceived either as a fragment of the Polish Borderlands (Kresy) or the Belarusian-Polish-Lithuanian border. The article proposes the idea of borderland understood as a small space symbiotically related to the fluidity of ethnic, cultural, linguistic identities, etc. The space-time of the Ashmian region in Żakiewicz’s novels appears as a model borderland and a place of functioning of hybrid identities. In the analyzed works, this type of identity appears in the form of local identity. Local identity is sometimes declared when being rooted in the region and living in it becomes the basic determinant of the characters’ identification, or it is revealed at the level of characters’ utterances when various languages are ‘heard’ – general Polish, borderland Polish, Belarusian, Russian, selected Lithuanian lexis.
