Between Ideology, Commerce and Education: On Contemporary Russian Television Animation for Children

Abstract

The perception of the art of animation as a tool for propagating a particular worldview and hierarchy of values has a long tradition in Russia. Nowadays, animated film is treated by Russian state and media institutions as a basic type of film art intended for and having specific educational tasks to perform. This article seeks to demonstrate the links between the entire verbal communication present in contemporary Russian television animated films for children and current social values, institutions influencing the production and distribution of animated films for children and social practices shaping preferences towards certain film conventions. The analysis is mediolinguistic in nature and covers such linguistic issues as the complexity and stylistic features of the text, carefulness of expression and word culture, presence of culturally specific elements, allusiveness and comedy. It leads to the conclusion that simplicity, stylistic neutrality and unambiguity of the message are preferred, which should not be weakened by linguistic humour. The presence of culturally specific elements is desirable, although their degree of integration with the text sometimes varies.
