The Role of Cultural Lexis in Foreign Language Teaching: The Example of Polish as a Foreign Language

Abstract

The article focuses on the cultural contexts that are crucial in the verbalization process. Effective communication depends not only on the knowledge of the linguistic system but also on understanding the unwritten rules and phenomena arising from foreign cultures, primarily expressed through vocabulary. It is emphasized that lexical and semantic competence in language didactics is mainly perceived from a linguistic and methodological perspective. Consequently, the cultural background of the meanings of many lexical units taught within Polish as a foreign language classes is often overlooked. Selected words and expressions related to school and university life (16 examples each) are presented, whose full understanding is linked to familiarity with the rules and customs prevailing in schools and universities. This thematic circle plays an important role for foreign students and students, whose numbers in Poland are increasing due to, among other things, the influx of Ukrainian immigrants after the outbreak of war.
