Zaginione rękopisy greckie z Biblioteki Załuskich

Abstract

The provisions of the Treaty of Riga (1921) provided the legal basis for the restitution of Poland’s cultural heritage looted since 1772. Pursuant to its terms, and under the supervision of Father Bronisław Ussas, invaluable collections — including holdings from the Załuski Library — were repatriated. The reconstruction of the inventory of the looted Załuski Library commenced shortly after the establishment of the Special Commission and was subsequently pursued within the framework of an international project jointly undertaken by the National Library of Poland and the Russian National Library. These efforts resulted in the production of both digital and printed versions of the reconstructed inventory.

Our research on Greek manuscripts in Poland has demonstrated that these reconstruction efforts failed to take into account the so-called Red Inventory, in which Father Ussas personally certified, by signature and official seal, the restitution of Greek manuscripts to Poland. Strikingly, certain of these manuscripts are entirely absent from the reconstructed inventory produced under the joint auspices of the two national libraries. This circumstance raises a fundamental question: what became of them?
