Narrative and Linguistic Evocations of the Polish-Ukrainian Borderland in Leon Kunicki’s Sketch Stories

Abstract

The subject of the research are Leon Kunicki’s sketch stories with rural themes (Stary rybak. Obrazek, Djak. Obrazek, Powrót z praźniku. Obrazek ludowy, Daniłko flis. Obrazek z obyczajów ludu okolic nadbużnych, Wasilowa chata. Obrazek z obyczajów okolic nadbużnych, Maryśka. Obrazek znad Buga). The article describes the narrative evocations of social, faith, and linguistic diversity of the Polish-Ukrainian borderland. The author also includes remarks on the linguistic styling in order to introduce elements of the Ukrainian subdialect into the text. The paper discusses the processes of developing bilingualism and language code switching in the borderland, proper names (toponyms, given names, surnames, maritonymic formations, nicknames) and appellative East Slavic loanwords. These phenomena prove the coexistence of various ethnic groups, faiths and languages in the borderland.
