Reinterpretations of Pie Jesu as Exemplified by Compositions for Baritone and Organ by Eugène Diaz and Carlotta Ferrari

Abstract

In this article, the author presents two compositions with a common title: Pie Jesu, whose words come from the medieval sequence Dies irae. These are pieces written by Eugène Diaz (1837– 1901) – a French composer, and Carlotta Ferrari (1975–) – a contemporary Italian composer. Based on the analysis of the pieces, the author answers the question of how the composers treat the source material, i.e. the Gregorian chant notation. Did they intend these pieces to refer directly to Latin chant or did they want to follow an autonomous path, so that their works, although rooted in tradition, would become an image of personal experiences and adopted aesthetics.
