“How Dare You!” Environmental Rhetoric in the Era of New Media – the Case of Greta Thunberg

Abstract

The ecological discourse in the 21st century is changing not only under the influence of the deepening climate crisis and other unfavourable changes in the natural environment, but also with the dynamic development of communication technology. The aim of this paper is to present the new media phenomenon of Greta Thunberg in the context of the environmental rhetoric she proposes. For this purpose, the communication characteristics of new media is presented first, and then the public speeches of the Swedish activist is subjected to rhetorical analysis. The research material includes 11 speeches included in the collection No One is Too Small to Make a Difference (Penguin Books, 2019) and a transcript of the famous New York speech “How dare you!”. The conclusions concern the alignment of Greta Thunberg’s ecological message with the communication conditions of new media.
