The Image of Nature in the Polish and Ukrainian Mental Lexicon

Abstract

The aim of this article is to present the linguistic image of nature as preserved in the Polish and Ukrainian mental lexicon. The author analyses the data of associative dictionaries, discussing and comparing the content ranges of terms which name natural objects based on the example of the association fields of the stimulus words las/лic and rzeka/piка. The author proves that the perception and understanding of selected natural objects reflected in the mental structures of Polish and Ukrainian speakers are characterised by a relatively high degree of differentiation. The linguistic picture of the natural world of Poles and Ukrainians, despite their common Slavic roots, is not consistent, and also reveals, apart from clear analogies, a number of differences.
