Formal and Semantic Limits of Diminutives in Children’s Literature. A Spanish-Polish Contrastive Study

Abstract

The objective of the present work is to examine the frequency of diminutives and, above all, to indicate the semantic functions they perform in children’s literature. For this purpose, the author conducts a contrastive analysis of diminutives taken from Spanish-Polish children’s literature. This study is based on two hand-annotated corpora (parallel and comparable), consisting of 8 representative books of children’s literature, in two language versions. The final conclusions of the research indicate that Polish has a higher frequency of diminutives. However, the difference in the frequency of diminutives in translated texts is much lower. In the parallel corpus, there are 10% more Polish diminutives, while in the comparable corpus, this difference is as high as 70%. This tends to involve limitations resulting from faithfulness to the original text. When it comes to the main semantic functions of diminutives, for both languages they are diminution and affectivity in a positive sense.
