Intermedia Message: On the Challenges of the Encounter of Opera and Film GenresIntermedia Message: On the Challenges of the Encounter of Opera and Film Genres

Abstract

The article is devoted to the mutual encounter between the genres of opera and film, their interaction and the challenges for the audience (including researchers) that arise from this meeting. The first medium represents art music, while the second one represents popular culture. The meeting opera–film can thus be described as a hybrid relationship and of a higher order because each of these media is also hybrid, which further complicates the analytical process. The text briefly discusses the history of the relationship between opera and film and indicates the types of these relationships. Then it presents the positions of the chosen, significant film critics and analysts on the title issue. It draws attention to the methodological challenges faced by both film scholars and musicologists. Finally, Werner Wolf’s theory of intermediality is invoked as an attractive analytical proposal for the study of opera–film relations.
