Animalistic Discourse in the Polish Synchronic Linguistic

Abstract

This article has the character of a review and, as a consequence, has a pragmatic goal. The material basis consists of linguistic publications about human-animal relations issued over thirty-two years (1990-2022). The main criterion for the selection of the animalistic discourse publications was the synchronic instruments used by the authors of the texts presented, not the date of the works or the collections of linguistic units chosen to illustrate the linguistic or linguistic-cultural basis of the analyses contained within.

Two main research trends were distinguished as the basis for this article: 1) an anthropocentric perspective based on the homo-animal opposition and the associated negative valuation of animals, and 2) a pro-ecological, or, more precisely, pro-animal, point of view. The classification has a ranking character and does not aim to stand in opposition to either of the perspectives on the perception of animals which have been distinguished. Many researchers have commented, however, on the inconsistency or ambivalence of the images fixed in the language. The scientific source for both bases is being sought among those same culture-forming factors.
