Christian References in Early Works by Ivan Vyrypayev

Abstract

Ivan Vyrypayev’s dramaturgy is saturated with biblical themes and full of Christian associations. However, the evangelical message and phraseology are constantly being transformed, which makes the Christian symbolism unclear. The aim of this article is to examine the implementation of the Christian paradigm in the concept of spirituality present in selected plays by Vyrypayev. The subject of the study is a set of Christian motifs with a high degree of flexibility and semantic capacity. It is also necessary to reveal the richness of the religious and philosophical inspirations in the work of the Russian playwright and to explore the spiritual threads present at various levels of the structure of selected works in the context of the Christian sacred symbolism. The article is an attempt to trace both close and distant sacral references and the strategies of modelling the spiritual reality portrayed in Vyrypayev's dramaturgy. The modelling of spirituality seems to have little connection with the prevailing Christian views. However, this disagreement does not necessarily signify a definite rejection.
