Abstract

This article examines implementing a service learning project as an innovative approach to supporting foreign language acquisition at the university level. The main aim was to identify the impact of students’ participation in the project on developing their linguistic and social competences. The study focused on a project at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin. English philology and applied linguistics students supported Ukrainian refugees through translation services and language classes. The methodology included systematic participant reflection, survey analysis, and observation of project activities. The findings indicate that service learning significantly enhances language proficiency, expands specialised vocabulary, develops translation skills, and fosters pro-social and integrative attitudes. The project proved to be an effective tool combining theory with practice, while promoting empathy, social responsibility, and cultural integration within the academic environment.
