The Language of the Anti-Government Protests in Belarus

Abstract

The subject of this article is a linguistic analysis of the protest discourse, triggered by the fraudulent elections in Belarus, in August 2020. The 2020 protests became the subject of several scientific publications, but mostly they take into account the socio-cultural aspect of this phenomenon. However, the linguistic aspect requires a systemic and theoretically justified research. The authors of the article are focused on one of the most important elements of this research agenda – the social-symbolic and pragmatic-communicative use of the Belarusian language during the protests. The research is based on selected sociolinguistic concepts, and the material is 300 “street texts” (posters, slogans, inscriptions from the urban landscape) and electronic texts (archived comments and posts from websites, social networks and messengers).

Keywords:
