The New Conditions of Reception of Russian Literature in Exile and the Decolonization of the Russian Studies Discourse in Poland: The Example of Research on Ivan Shmelyov’s Works

Abstract

The article reflects on how socio-political conditions determine the reception of Russian literature and whether the discourse of Russian studies in Poland should be changed. Starting from the ways of interpreting the first-wave Russian emigration literature established in Polish literary studies, the author reflects on Polish interpretative patterns concerning relatively old Russian literature and the need to change these patterns. The relevant research material is the emigration prose of Ivan Shmelyov, which contains a wealth of elements of historical ideologization of Russia and homesickness. The author presents Shmelyov’s works while considering the nationalistic content currently emphasized in Russian literature, and reflects on the circumstances in which the works in question were written, and the context in which they are read today by different recipients. Considerations that take into account the latest proposals of postcolonial criticism lead to the conclusion that the study of painful topics in Russian literature should be continued, and the methods used in this research should be focused on attentive and responsible reading.
