Polish Books for Children and Youth in Serbia After 1991: Some Remarks on the Canon and the Role of Translators

Abstract

The article is devoted to the presence of Polish books for children and youth in Serbia in 1991–2022. The text presents the translation and publishing activity in the period in question and the changes in the repertoire of translations. Special attention was drawn to the issue of the canon of Polish literature for the youngest and the role that translators and anthologists such as Anđelija Jočić, Anna Swędzioł, Mila Gavrilović, Hanna Gadomski and Zoran Ɖerić played in shaping that in Serbia. With their translations, the above-mentioned translators, on the one hand, reflect the Polish canon of literature for children and youth, while promoting well-known and award-winning authors. On the other hand, they are bold enough to propose texts that are less representative, but valuable and interesting.
