Variations of Verbs of Visual Perception in the Writings of St. Francis of Assisi. Problems with Translation from Latin into Polish and Italian

Abstract

The article presents the problem of Latin verbs of visual perception in the corpus of the writings of St. Francis of Assisi and their translations into Polish and Italian. The meaning and role of prefixes in combination with the verb spectare / spicere and semantic changes associated with linguistic and situational contexts are presented. A special place is given to the problematic verb despicere, the correct understanding of which will be examined in the context of other places in the writings that reveal the author’s characteristic way of perceiving earthly things (terrena). The analyses and reflections conducted will lead to the conclusion, which is an attempt to grasp the general characteristics of visual perception according to Francis, specific to mystical language. The entire investigation is meant to be an example of the difficulties of translation and a suggestion for translators.
