The Concept of MISERY in the Translations of Sister Faustina Kowalska’s Dzienniczek (Diary) into English: A Cognitive Linguistic Analysis of Denominative Variants

Abstract

In the paper, I discuss the problem of translating the lexical item nędza ‘misery’ in the translation of s. Faustina Kowalska’s Diary by the Marian Press Publishing House and by Teresa Bałuk-Ulewiczowa into English. I adopt a Cognitive Linguistic (CL) approach to the analysis, whereby translation is understood as re-conceptualisation of the original conceptual content. The analysis shows that the versions use different translation strategies. Still, both versions use denominative variants that maintain the original axiological orientation conveyed by the item nędza. The analysis helps reveal the cognitive-cultural foundations of lexical choices made by the translators of Diary.
