The aim of this article is to present certain problems of interlingual equivalence at the level of lexical fixedness, as well as to analyse fixed structures that include the lexemes pain in French and chleb in Polish. Idiomatology and common elements in this phraseology are also examined. Bread (pain/chleb) frequently involves parallel meanings and symbolism in both French and Polish. However, both languages have created phraseological units that are specific and characteristic of only one language. Units of this type are numerous and represent structures which are difficult to translate directly into the other language without resorting to paraphrase.
