Translations into Polish of the Word/Term Bread and Its Variants in the Context of French Bakeries in Poland and Their Advertising

Abstract

This study is of a pragmatic character as it is devoted to the translation into Polish of the word bread and its variants in so-called French bakeries that have recently appeared in Poland. It is not limited to the lexeme bread, but to everything that surrounds it in both the textual context and the macrocontext of its appearance: names of the ingredients needed for its French-style production, product names, as well as the terminology appearing in the advertising of these companies. This research is based on three investigative methodologies: a linguistic analysis of the translation processes applied to the texts constituting the corpus, interviews with the translators who worked on the translation of these materials; an analysis of the intersemiotic relationships between the signifiers and their referents, that is to say, between the names of the products belonging to the notion of ‘bread’ and their images.

Keywords:

French bakery, bread, advertising, referent, signified, intersemiotic translation
