Some Remarks on the Resilience Power of Music

Abstract

In the article, I examine the domain of emotions evoked by sounds, i.e. internal involvements experienced, co-defined, and redefined by music. Sounds may generate emotions, which in this study are interpreted as resilience adaptative strategies that people apply in social situations. An important factor influencing the evoking of emotions is the perception of the sphere of sound as such and the processes of remembering auditory stimuli and reacting to them. The cognitive domain, which is usually the basis for emotional arousal, is combined in this context with the behavioral sphere, i.e., the actions taken by the listeners, portrayed in the study as the manifestation of emotions in the presence of others. To illustrate the assumptions presented in the paper, I use examples taken from the media: high art (poetry of Homer’s Odyssey) and popular culture (television coverage of a festival concert).
